I recently went back to Malaysia for some family stuff - and along my journey, I acquired AND tasted some gems that I had been yearning since the last 4 years I haven’t been home (curse you covid!!) Here’s a few highlights that you should absolutely try when you visit ᵕ̈ Huge thank you to my aunt and uncle who drove and brought me to these places to rekindle my soul~
Destination : Kuala Lumpur 🏙️
First stop : Yu Kee Bah Ku Teh Subang

Bak ku teh is my first stop cause what’s better to eat than drinking a ton of hot soup after a 25+ hour flight? From top right to lower right: we ordered, white pepper pig intestine soup, fermented cabbage spicy and sour soup, and then my favorite*** pork bone Chinese herbal soup with tofu skin. Good for bone health!
Second stop: Oriental Kopi 華陽

For breakfast, our savory taste never go for cereal or pastey oats, we go for: Curry Laksa and Penang Prawn Mee. For dessert, we ate Cendol, which is a sweet coconut milk shaved ice with red bean and pandan starch. Another local specialty is peanut butter toast topped with butter coffee ᵕ̈ My family grew up with this for decades and its very great to taste such prized recipes that’s passed down so many generations.
Third Stop: Baan Thai

In History we had beef, but through food, we united. Thai cuisine are one of my favorites!! We had pandan chicken, Papaya salad, and a yummy steamed siakap (Sea bass) with Spicy Lime Sauce <3 It was spiiicy.
Fourth Stop: Hor yu 河鱼

Hor Yu has been my a childhood restaurant, every time I visited my relatives in the city we always went here for their famous steamed lake fish. We had a black bean soy sauce steamed fish + steamed oiled cabbage, oyster sauce soft tofu, and fatty pork with black fungus! See all those pictures behind me? Those are placed up by the owner that showcased famous HK stars that visited his restaurant- Yuen Wah is one of them!!! ᵕ̈
Fifth Stop: Restoran Orchard View Yong Tau Foo 甜園安邦酿豆腐

One of my Hakka heritage that I love is our famous Yong Tau Foo, a dish consisting of fish paste wrapped in vegetables, Okra, spiced chili, bitter gourd, eggplant, and many more!! We ate it with some Kampung fish, oiled vegetables and a hearty pork bone soup! One thing I forgot to order which is paper-wrapped chicken (纸包鸡);which is another childhood favorite!
Sixth Stop: Sate Kajang Haji Samuri

You canNOT leave Malaysia without trying our Delicious Ikan Bakar and Satay skewers!! Ikan bakar is our charcoal-grilled fish topped with spicy sambal sauce and garlic/onion garnish!! My uncle taught me that the upper part of the fish (the shoulder) is more favorable than the stomach, which is more fishy, but to me they both taste very good!! dipped in creamy peanut sauce - the skewers sure is a lovely Malay delicacy.
Special mention: TANYU 探鱼烤鱼
I died and went to heaven with this fish. It is out of this world. Fun fact, I WAS not a fish person, but my hunt for food got the better of my bitterness toward these little fishes. It just shows that taking a second chance on trying things does make your life better!! (Unless it’s allergies then I’m so sorry)
I still have soooo much more food to show you but Substack/Gmail have the audacity to put a limit on emails! (my images are too powerful) But here you can have a nice good glimpse of what is on the other side of the world. And a huge part of these.. it can cost less than $20 - 30 for 2-3 people.
So I fully agree that If you are not happy, you are just in America.
Happy Eating Vicariously! <3
